Colombia launches joint task force to protect pipeline and fight ELN rebels
On Monday, President Abelardo launched the Urano joint task force in Valledupar to combat rebel groups and drug gangs in Colombia's northeast, marking a major shift in military strategy.
Former President Gustavo Petro's administration dropped this strategy two years ago, prioritizing greater operational control for army commanders in rural areas instead.
Task force Urano targets the National Liberation Army to stop fuel theft from pipelines running from the Caribbean coast to Barrancabermeja, which Espriella accused of being used to "feed" criminal economies.
Espriella canceled peace talks with remaining rebel groups after taking office in August, declaring there will be "no negotiations or empathy with terrorism."
Colombia deployed joint task forces for nearly two decades to combat rebel groups, achieving key victories against the FARC until a 2016 peace deal ended that approach.
"Urano" seeks to stop the theft of hydrocarbons and beat armed groups in the area, such as the ELN and the Gulf Clan. The post After two years, Abelardo revives the Joint Task Forces appeared first on La Silla Empty.
