Collaboration is key strategy for new King County Executive
The plan includes nearly $5 million for gun violence prevention, a proposal to double childcare funding and a transit roadmap through 2038.
On June 10, King County Executive Girmay Zahilay delivered his first State of the County address in Federal Way, outlining a four-prong administration plan focused on Breaking the Cycle, Building for Affordability, Being in Community, and Better Government.
Rapid population growth strains the region: King County has grown by more than 400,000 people over 16 years, yet infrastructure has not kept pace, prompting Zahilay's focus on operational efficiency and improved public services.
To bolster community safety, Zahilay pledged nearly $5 million to strengthen the Gun Violence Prevention office and committed to opening at least 500 units of supportive or affordable housing within 500 days.
The administration unveiled Metro's Next Stop roadmap through 2038, delivering nine new bus routes and four rapid drive routes every 15 minutes, alongside a proposal to double childcare investment through the Best Starts for Kids levy next year.
Residents can sign up for a new Volunteer Corps in the coming weeks to address regional challenges, while the administration centralizes internal audits to resolve the nearly $35 billion funding gap at Sound Transit and other financial management problems.
