Staff notified police and social services after the drug was found, and the school said it works with families to keep pupils safe.
Staff at Glasgow Academy discovered a Class-A drug in a five-year-old pupil's schoolbag several weeks ago, prompting the school to contact police and social services regarding the alarming discovery.
Responding to inquiries, a Glasgow Academy spokesperson stated the school does not comment on individual children but acts promptly when concerns arise to keep pupils safe.
Recent data from the Scottish Health Survey indicates cocaine use amongst adults in Scotland's wealthiest postcodes has doubled, climbing from 2 per cent in 2021 to 4 per cent in 2023.
Alcohol and Drugs Minister Maree Todd described the incident as 'deeply concerning,' stating the Scottish Government continues 'to take meaningful action to tackle drug harms.'
Annemarie Ward, chief executive officer of addiction recovery charity FAVOR, called the incident a 'wake-up call,' noting that 'every line' of cocaine supports crime and children 'often pay the price for adult recklessness.
