Portugal chooses between a moderate and a populist in runoff presidential election
Center-left Socialist candidate António José Seguro is heavily favored to defeat hard-right populist André Ventura in Portugal’s presidential runoff election.
In Portugal, the second round of the presidential election will be contested today between socialist Antonio Jose Seguro and far-right candidate Andre Ventura. Seguro won the first round with about 31 percent of the vote, while Ventura received 23.5 percent. Seguro is expected to win the second round. The pre-election campaign was marked by severe storms.
Despite the likely defeat, analysts believe the far-right candidate should emerge from the election with increased political capital, while the bad weather may increase voter abstention.
