The Smoky Mountains’ highest peak is reverting to the Cherokee name Kuwohi
- Clingmans Dome has been renamed Kuwohi to honor the Cherokee people, who consider the mountain sacred, following lobbying by the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians.
- The U.S. Board of Geographic Names unanimously approved this change on Sept. 18, recognizing the historical and cultural significance of the name.
- Superintendent Cassius Cash stated that the park team supports restoring the name Kuwohi and acknowledges its importance to the Cherokee people and their history.
