Carbon Removal Startup Climeworks Is Cutting 22% of Staff

(Bloomberg) — Climeworks AG is laying off 106 people, as startups that aim to reverse global warming face a reckoning with the US government slashing climate incentives and programs.

The British newspaper The Guardian and the French news agency AFP have covered the Climeworks problem, which was reported by Heimildin, as well as the Swiss state television SRF, which reported over the weekend that Climeworks had announced mass layoffs this week. Climeworks to cut 10% of staff amid slowdown in cleantech confidence

SWISS direct air capture (DAC) startup Climeworks is cutting 106 jobs, including 78 in Switzerland, due to “macroeconomic uncertainty”.

Last week, we learned that the Zurich-based company was planning to implement mass layoffs. Today, it's official: more than 100 employees are to leave, many of them in Switzerland. Negotiations for a social plan are underway.

Microsoft and other tech companies want to reduce their nominal CO2 emissions by using climateworks, but the CO2 capture provider does not even manage to compensate for its own emissions. (Read more)
