Cliffhanger: B.C. Firefighters Offer Helping Hoof to Stranded Goat - The Northern View
Firefighters and rope rescue technicians lowered the animal to safety and reunited it with its owner after an overnight cliffside rescue.
On Monday, Oct. 5, the Metchosin Fire Department rescued a domestic goat stranded on a cliff-face ledge after the animal tumbled over the edge on its owner's property the previous night.
Firefighters faced challenging conditions requiring extensive preparation; crews cleared broom the size of small trees before trained rope rescue technicians descended the cliff face to reach the stranded animal.
Sisters Shannon Burnside and Melony Gilbert watched from a front-row seat as the climber used treats to calm the goat and carefully harnessed her, navigating a close call with falling rock.
When the pair reached the ground, onlookers broke into applause, and Burnside called it "such a heart filling event to witness" as the goat reunited with its relieved owner.
This rescue demonstrates the diverse skills of Metchosin Fire members, who regularly train in technical rope operations to remain prepared for emergency calls involving both people and animals in the community.
