Clayface Ending Explains How [Spoiler] Survives
Matt Hagen’s revenge ends in a grotesque final transformation, and the film keeps Batman offscreen while building a more personal Gotham story.
- In the film's final moments, former actor Matt Hagen survives his apparent destruction, retreating into the Gotham City sewers. He uses his shapeshifting abilities to disguise himself as a homeless man, continuing to stalk Dr. Caitlyn Corr while retaining his obsession.
- Triggered by experimental regenerative nanobots, Hagen's tragic shape-shifting affliction fueled his transformation into the villain Clayface, leading him to turn his sights on Corr after she treated him with the experimental process.
- To achieve Clayface's monstrous final form, director James Watkins utilized a physical stand-in rather than relying solely on CGI. Production went through 13, 14 iterations to get that final form right, Watkins said.
- Clayface marks the DCU's first foray into Gotham City without featuring Batman himself. Director Watkins confirmed, "I would say Batman exists in this world, but it's just not his story."
- Mob boss Markos Szabo's control over the city sets the stage for future introductions of iconic criminal figures like Carmine Falcone and Salvatore Maroni, establishing significant groundwork for the broader DCU.
