Cowork for Claude Can Tap Into a Folder on Your Computer and Organize Its Contents

Anthropic's new Cowork feature lets non-technical users automate tasks by granting Claude access to folders via Mac app and Chrome plugin, expanding AI automation beyond developers.

  • On Monday, Anthropic released Cowork as a research preview to bring Claude Code capabilities to non-developers, available now to Claude Max subscribers via the Claude macOS app.
  • Anthropic noticed developers using Claude Code for non-coding tasks, leading it to remove command-line complexity and design Cowork as a simpler consumer interface in recent months.
  • Users designate a folder Claude can access to read, edit, or create files locally, while Cowork integrates Connectors and a Chrome plugin to automate web apps and queue multiple tasks, Anthropic said.
  • Amid safety concerns, Anthropic warned users about destructive actions and unclear instructions, urging "very clear guidance" and noting prompt injection risks despite "sophisticated defenses," with agent safety still an industry challenge.
  • The launch positions Anthropic to challenge Microsoft Copilot in desktop agent workflows, with plans to add cross-device sync and Windows support while a waitlist opens as it learns from the preview; Cowork was built in about a week and a half, possibly by Claude Code.
