Chris Shea wins Republican nomination for U.S. House in Connecticut's 5th Congressional District
The party-endorsed candidate, a retired Navy SEAL and firefighter, won with about 80% of the vote, preliminary results showed.
- On Tuesday, firefighter Chris Shea won the Republican primary in Connecticut's 5th Congressional District with 80 percent of the vote, defeating Jonathan De Barros and securing the party's nomination to challenge Democratic U.S. Rep. Jahana Hayes in November.
- A retired Navy SEAL with more than 30 years of service, Shea entered the race in January as a political outsider and gained the most support at the Connecticut Republican Party convention earlier this year.
- Two years earlier, Republican George Logan came within roughly one percentage point of defeating Hayes, making the district Connecticut's closest congressional contest that year; Logan opted not to seek the nomination again in 2026, opening the door for Shea.
- Hayes has represented the 5th District since 2019 and won reelection in 2024 with 53.4 percent of the vote; she became the first Black woman to represent Connecticut in Congress and is a former National Teacher of the Year.
- Republicans have repeatedly targeted the 5th District as their best opportunity to break Democrats' hold on Connecticut's congressional delegation, positioning November's rematch as a potential national battleground for both parties.
