Peltola denies knowing about Alaska spoiler candidate as Justice Department escalates investigation
New grand jury subpoenas and records demands follow reports that Mary Peltola’s campaign may have helped recruit a same-name candidate, officials said.
The Justice Department escalated its criminal investigation into an Alaska Senate candidate sharing a name with Republican incumbent Sen. Dan Sullivan, issuing new grand jury subpoenas on Thursday.
Subpoenas followed a report by The New York Times alleging Democratic candidate Mary Peltola's campaign helped recruit Dan J. Sullivan Jr. to siphon votes from the incumbent.
Criticism intensified Wednesday as President Donald Trump called for the criminal prosecution of Peltola, while Vice President JD Vance accused her of trying to "steal a Senate seat."
Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy ordered a state investigation into the Democratic campaign, writing that reporting "substantially supports" earlier findings of an organized effort to manipulate elections.
Dan J. Sullivan Jr. has denied claims he was recruited by the Democratic campaign, asserting he had "zero, none, zilch" contact with Peltola since announcing his run in June.
