Chinese State-Sponsored Hackers Breach US Treasury Systems
- Chinese hackers accessed several U.S. Treasury Department workstations and documents after compromising a third-party software service provider, according to the agency.
- The Treasury Department learned of the breach on Dec. 8 when BeyondTrust reported that hackers had stolen a key used for remote access.
- The compromised service has been taken offline, and there is no evidence of ongoing access to Treasury information, said Aditi Hardikar.
- The incident has been attributed to a China state-sponsored advanced persistent threat actor, according to a letter to Congress.
