Chinese robot beats Usain Bolt's 100m world record in test run

Lightning reached 14.5 meters per second in a preparatory race, as China’s state broadcaster said the robot beat Usain Bolt’s 100-meter mark by 0.26 seconds.

  • On Saturday, the Lightning humanoid robot developed by Honor ran 100 meters in 9.32 seconds, surpassing Usain Bolt's 9.58-second world record set at the 2009 World Athletics Championships in Berlin, China's state broadcaster reported.
  • The second World Humanoid Robot Games opened in Beijing on Saturday, prompting the preparatory test run where Lightning reached record speeds during demonstrations of diverse robotic capabilities.
  • Following its April victory in the 21-km Beijing half marathon completed in 50 minutes and 26 seconds, researchers lengthened Lightning's legs by 10 cm to 1.05 metres to optimize stride ahead of the Games.
  • China's humanoid robot industry is rapidly accelerating toward large-scale commercialization, as advances in artificial intelligence and manufacturing propel the sector from experimental projects toward practical industrial deployment.
  • Achieving a peak speed of 14.5 meters per second, Lightning demonstrates sustained velocity that positions the robot as a milestone in humanoid robotics, showcasing potential to transition from athletic feats to functional tools.
