Rubio stated on Wednesday that censorship cannot erase memories of the military assault 37 years ago, when Chinese troops opened fire to end pro-democracy protests in Beijing on June 4, 1989.
Writing on Facebook, Taiwan President Lai Ching-te urged Beijing to "acknowledge the truth" regarding the incident, warning that a truly great country should not "blindly believe in military might or engage in militarism."
Authorities in Beijing and Hong Kong prevented families from visiting graves at Wan Cemetery this year, which Amnesty International called "a heartless act," while police maintained heavy presence near Victoria Park.
Derek Chu, a former district councillor distributing free candles annually since 2022, told AFP that "the space for speech is more and more narrow" in Hong Kong following the 2020 national security law.
