China Pressed Anthropic for Access to Its Mythos AI Model and Was Refused
Anthropic said the request came from a Chinese think tank, not the government, and officials at the U.S. National Security Council were concerned.
A representative from a Chinese think tank requested access to Anthropic's newest model, "Mythos", during a Carnegie-sponsored meeting in Singapore last month; Anthropic denied the request.
Mythos can exploit unknown vulnerabilities in operating systems and web browsers, fueling national security concerns regarding rapid AI capability diffusion and potential transfer to foreign actors.
Officials at the National Security Council were informed of the interaction and expressed concern, viewing third-party engagements as potential vectors for capability transfer.
Chris McGuire, a senior fellow at the Council for Foreign Relations, urged the U.S. to focus on expanding its lead in powerful AI models to maintain competitive advantage.
McGuire warned that China could develop a "Mythos"-level model in eight months, while governance discussions center on API-level restrictions and export controls to manage frontier model access.
