In January 2016, a prefectural survey revealed that Okinawa's child poverty rate was as high as 29.9%. This year marks exactly 10 years since the discovery of child poverty, which had previously been difficult to see. The prefecture's low income and high proportion of single-mother households had long been considered a serious problem, but the prefecture's residents were shocked to learn that the poverty rate was nearly double the national rate.
