The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is reviewing whether officers followed protocol after a shoplifting call escalated into a shooting that left a woman critically injured.
- On Sunday, 1-year-old Kohen Wiley died after a law enforcement officer shot at a vehicle outside a Walmart in Senatobia, Mississippi, about 40 miles south of Memphis, Tennessee.
- The Senatobia Police Department and Tate County Sheriff's deputies responded to an alleged shoplifting call when they observed two adults and the child fleeing the store into a vehicle; the driver then drove toward officers, nearly hitting one.
- Licole Wiley, the child's grandmother, criticized police for opening fire in a public setting. "Everybody that was involved need to be held accountable," Wiley said.
- The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is leading an independent inquiry into the shooting and gathering evidence to determine whether the officer's actions adhered to established protocols.
