Chief says about 230 homes destroyed by B.C. wildfire
Chief Dan Wilson said crews are still battling the out-of-control blaze as officials work to account for losses and support evacuees.
- On Tuesday, Okanagan Indian Band Chief Dan Wilson reported approximately 230 homes destroyed by the Bradley Creek wildfire, including 30 band members' homes and 200 non-band residences on the Westside.
- Driven by winds gusting up to 115 kilometres per hour on Aug. 1, the Bradley Creek wildfire surged beyond 2,000 hectares; it now spans 2,852 hectares and is burning out of control.
- Some residents had only five minutes to evacuate on Aug. 1, though water bombers saved the Cultural Immersion School in Komasket Park; Wilson described the destruction as "war zone" from his helicopter tour.
- Andrew Morrison, director of regional response with the Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness, is coordinating re-entry support with the OKIB as crews secure utility lines and infrastructure ahead of assessments.
- Fire centre manager Jeffrey Dunne warned that warmer temperatures and winds arriving next week pose risks; the Wildfire Service is prioritizing containment of current fires while monitoring for new starts.
