Chicago Students Pray for Pope Leo XIV and Send Care Package to Rome
Students at a Chicago Catholic school are sending get-well cards and a White Sox blanket as Pope Leo XIV recovers from lung surgery.
Students at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Academy in Chicago are sending a care package to Pope Leo XIV, including a Chicago White Sox blanket, as he recovers from surgery.
Pope Leo underwent surgery at Gemelli Hospital on Tuesday, during which doctors removed the lower lobe of his right lung following a lung cancer diagnosis.
Eighth-Grader Lucas Knudsen said, "We are with him," on behalf of Team 14, a group of 40 members who met the Pope in Rome last year.
Recovery is progressing normally after blood tests and chest X-rays, the Holy See Press Office reported Wednesday, though doctors await further test results to determine cancer staging and treatment.
American Cancer Society expert William Dahut noted that early-stage lung cancer outcomes are significantly improved, with about 80% of patients alive at five years.
