Architectural Firm Proposes New Domed Stadium for Chicago Bears in Bridgeport
The concept would pair a Bears stadium with mixed-use development and could help keep the team in Chicago as lawmakers weigh stadium options.
On Wednesday, architecture firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill released renderings for a new domed Chicago Bears stadium at the Bridgeport site currently housing Guaranteed Rate Field, aiming to keep the team within city limits.
This conceptual plan follows the Bears' ongoing search for a new home in Hammond, Indiana, while the Chicago White Sox explore a potential move to the South Loop at a site known as "the 78."
The firm envisions a mixed-use district featuring housing and entertainment, leveraging existing CTA and Metra transportation infrastructure, though the proposal remains an early-stage concept without formal backing from the Bears or the Illinois Sports Facilities Authority.
Alderman Nicole Lee, representing the 11th ward, said she is intrigued by the potential for neighborhood investment but remains skeptical, noting she has had no direct conversations with the team regarding a move to Bridgeport.
Community pushback recently forced a federal environmental review for a proposed Amtrak maintenance facility in the same area, adding complexity to any potential redevelopment of the land currently used by the White Sox.
