Bermuda snail thought to be extinct now thrives after a decade’s effort
Over 100,000 greater Bermuda snails have been reintroduced, establishing six colonies and preventing extinction through a global conservation partnership.
On February 7, Chester Zoo announced the greater Bermuda land snail has been brought back from the brink with more than 100,000 bred and reintroduced into Bermuda.
A 2014 rediscovery in Hamilton, Bermuda revealed survivors flown to Chester Zoo after declines from habitat loss, pesticide use, and invasive predators such as 'wolf snails' and carnivorous flatworms.
Breeders used specialist pods in northwest England to scale up numbers, and 2019 initial releases followed after Chester Zoo husbandry team refined methods and created the first breeding guide.
