Chennai-bound IndiGo flight makes emergency landing after passenger’s power bank catches fire mid-air
Cabin crew and passengers extinguished the blaze, and IndiGo arranged a replacement aircraft after the midair fire, the airline said.
On Sunday, October 11, 2026, IndiGo Flight 6E 6115 from Delhi to Chennai made an emergency landing at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad after a passenger's power bank caught fire mid-air.
IndiGo reported smoke from a "personal electronic device," which local reports identified as a power bank; airline policy prohibits storing power banks in overhead compartments, requiring they remain with passengers.
Around 180 passengers and seven crew members were aboard the Airbus A321 when the fire broke out; "the cabin crew responded promptly, and the situation was brought under control," the airline said.
Authorities confirmed there were no reported injuries following the incident, and passengers later caught a separate plane to their final destination while officials launched an investigation.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, lithium-ion batteries can undergo "thermal runaway," where temperatures rise uncontrollably, a process previously linked to the recall of approximately 1.16 million Anker PowerCore 10000 units.
