Chelsea Eye Surprise Free Move for Former Liverpool Star After Failing to Get Lamine Camara
Chelsea are seeking a midfield replacement after Enzo Fernandez’s £125 million sale and Monaco’s late cancellation of a £55 million deal for Lamine Camara.
According to FootMercato, Chelsea are in talks to sign former Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum on a free transfer. Despite the summer transfer window closing on Tuesday, Premier League clubs remain permitted to sign free agents.
The 35-year-old midfielder left Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq this summer upon his contract's expiration. Previously, Wijnaldum joined Paris Saint-Germain in 2021, moving to Saudi Arabia two years later.
For Al-Ettifaq last season, Wijnaldum scored 17 goals and registered seven assists in 34 appearances. He was a key figure under Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, winning the Premier League and Champions League.
Chelsea prioritized midfield reinforcements after selling Enzo Fernandez to Manchester City for £125 million. The club also failed to sign Lamine Camara from Monaco for £55 million and saw an approach for Martin Zubimendi rejected by Arsenal.
While negotiating with Chelsea, the veteran player recently held talks with Major League Soccer side Real Salt Lake. His next destination remains uncertain as multiple options remain available.
After the failure of Lamine Camara to arrive in the final lines of the market and the transfer of Enzo Fernandez to Manchester City, Chelsea immediately returned to work to strengthen its median.
