ChatGPT Can Now Keep Tabs on What You're up to in Case You Need Reminding Later

The opt-in feature turns Mac app and website activity into a searchable timeline and adds privacy controls, OpenAI said.

  • On Thursday, OpenAI announced 'Computer History,' a new ChatGPT Mac feature that tracks clicks and keystrokes to help the AI 'remember' your work activities without taking screenshots.
  • Designed as an opt-in tool, Computer History replaces the earlier 'Chronicle' feature and utilizes macOS accessibility processes to create an 'interaction-event stream' from allowed apps and websites.
  • Users can fine-tune tracking by selecting 'Exclude these apps' or 'Include only these websites' in settings, and ask questions like 'What was I working on before I took a break?' to retrieve activity summaries.
  • OpenAI acknowledged that 'Computer History files can contain sensitive information' and are not encrypted, meaning other programs running under the same macOS user could potentially access them.
  • While the feature rolls out globally now, access in the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and the European Economic Area will follow in coming weeks for ChatGPT Pro, Business, or Enterprise users.
