ChatGPT Linked to Rise in UK Ritual Abuse Reports

UK reports of organised ritual abuse have risen in the past 18 months, with some survivors citing ChatGPT as a tool that encouraged them to seek professional support, NAPAC said.

  • Yesterday, UK police identified ChatGPT as an unexpected driver behind rising organised ritual abuse reports, with charities and survivors reporting more first contacts citing the AI chatbot.
  • Survivors are using ChatGPT to privately explore memories, which may lower emotional barriers and explain increased disclosures, according to experts and psychologists.
  • The National Police Chiefs' Council has formed a specialist working group and, this month, NPCC, Napac and the Hydrant Programme issued a professional briefing on spiritual abuse.
  • A review last year by Dr Elly Hanson found convictions only reflect a fraction of cases; only 14 criminal cases since 1982 have acknowledged ritual elements, says the review.
  • Experts warn generative AI tools can amplify occult communities and cloak harmful content, while perpetrators range from abusive families to organised networks and paedophile rings, as a Scotland conviction last year showed.
