ChatGPT Can Now Add Your Mac Activity to Its Memories
The opt-in feature records clicks, keystrokes and app switches, then turns them into text summaries and a scrollable timeline.
- OpenAI released Computer History, an opt-in feature for the ChatGPT Mac desktop app that tracks interaction events across apps and websites to build a searchable timeline.
- Replacing the earlier Chronicle research preview, the system logs clicks, keystrokes, and app switches via the macOS accessibility system; "Computer History records interaction events and does not capture your screen," OpenAI notes.
- Users control the feature through settings, where it remains off by default; Temporary Memory files are retained for 48 hours, while individuals can exclude specific apps containing sensitive information.
- OpenAI warns "Computer History increases the risk of prompt injection" from app content and that data is stored unencrypted locally; the company advises users to "Turn it off during communications with other people" unless they have prior consent.
- Currently available to ChatGPT Pro, Business, and Enterprise subscribers in most regions, the feature will expand to the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom in the coming weeks, OpenAI said.
