King Charles Would ‘Carefully’ Consider China Visit, Senior Aide Says
Buckingham Palace has not ruled out a trip as ministers weigh whether to confront or appease Beijing, with the last visit 40 years ago.
On Saturday, sources indicated King Charles would be prepared to undertake a state visit to China if requested by Prime Minister Andy Burnham, with Buckingham Palace not ruling out the potentially controversial trip.
A British monarch has only ever made one state visit to China: Queen Elizabeth undertook that trip four decades ago in 1986. No outgoing UK state visit to the country has occurred since.
Charles has historically maintained distance from Chinese leadership, boycotting state banquets and privately criticizing Communist Party officials as 'appalling old waxworks' following the 1997 Hong Kong handover ceremony.
The Palace is not ruling out the visit, though Burnham's spokesman told AFP that questions about the monarch's travel remain 'one for the palace' rather than the government.
A senior palace aide described China as a 'hugely important country' while cautioning that organizing a state visit would pose significant complexity given the challenging diplomatic environment.
