Colorado Snowplow Driver Charged in Deadly Icy Crash with Youth Hockey Team
Investigators say the plow crossed the median on icy pavement and struck a van carrying 10 people, killing its driver and injuring eight others.
- On Thursday, the Colorado State Patrol charged Colorado Department of Transportation snowplow driver Colton Wiedman with careless driving causing death following the Jan 29 fatal I-70 collision near mile marker 218.
- Investigators determined Wiedman lost control while driving westbound in Clear Creek County, breaking through the cable rail at the median and entering eastbound traffic where he struck a van carrying a youth hockey team.
- Manuel Alejandro Lorenzana Villegas, the van driver and father of one player, was killed in the collision, while eight passengers including five children were hospitalized with serious injuries.
- Wiedman faces one count of careless driving causing death, four counts causing serious bodily injury, and three counts causing bodily injury; officials said he remains on administrative leave.
- The 5th Judicial District Attorney's Office is prosecuting the case, with Wiedman scheduled for an arraignment hearing in Clear Creek County Court on May 5.
