Johnson County Prosecutors Drop Case Against Chiefs Assistant Coach
The case was dismissed without prejudice, and a judge ordered the affidavit sealed after prosecutors reviewed additional information.
On Thursday, the Johnson County District Court in Kansas dismissed the misdemeanor domestic battery charge against Kansas City Chiefs defensive backs coach Dave Merritt, with the case dismissed without prejudice.
Arrested on April 23, 2026, by Overland Park police, Merritt faced one count of misdemeanor domestic battery for allegedly causing bodily harm to a family member.
The District Attorney's office reviewed additional information and agreed the matter should be dismissed, attorney Ryan Ginie told NFL Network, while a judge ordered the affidavit sealed.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid stated, "We're still going through that whole procedure," emphasizing the team's policy to let law enforcement handle legal matters. Merritt returned to practice last week.
Merritt posted on social media Thursday evening: "There's not a mistake you've made that's too much for the Mercy of God." He has been with the Chiefs since 2019 and helped secure five Super Bowls.
