MARION — Illinois Treasurer Michael Frerichs today returned a lost Purple Heart medal to the grand-niece of a World War II veteran who earned it while fighting the Germans in Italy.

Ceremony honors veterans on Purple Heart Day

Three Purple Heart recipients were honored in Plattsburgh at the second annual Purple Heart Day ceremony. The event included a ceremonial walk along the Purple Heart Trail, part of the new Battlefield Memorial Gateway on Lake Champlain. Community members and veterans groups joined in the celebration.
