- On May 28, 2025, the Union Cabinet in New Delhi approved a hike in Minimum Support Prices for fourteen major kharif crops for the upcoming 2025-26 season to support farmers with fair returns before sowing begins.
- This decision is in accordance with the 2018-19 Union Budget directive that set the Minimum Support Prices to be a minimum of one and a half times the average nationwide cost incurred in producing the crops, aiming to guarantee fair earnings for farmers.
- The highest MSP hikes include a Rs 820 per quintal increase for nigerseed, Rs 596 for ragi, Rs 589 for cotton, Rs 579 for sesamum, and smaller raises for tur, urad, and paddy.
- Government estimates project farmer margins over production costs as 63% for bajra, 59% for maize and tur, 53% for urad, and at least 50% for other crops, ensuring sustained profitability.
- The MSP hike reinforces government commitment to farmer welfare and agricultural prosperity, noting procurement growth and payments surpassing ₹16 lakh crore for kharif crops from 2014-15 to 2024-25.
