CenterPoint Energy conducts full-scale emergency exercise in preparation for 2026 hurricane season
More than 400 workers and 100 officials joined the simulation, which tested damage assessment, restoration and customer communications before hurricane season.
On Thursday, CenterPoint Energy conducted its annual full-scale emergency response exercise in Houston, simulating a Category 3 hurricane impacting the Greater Houston area to prepare for the upcoming hurricane season.
This exercise builds on the Greater Houston Resiliency Initiative, launched in 2024 to strengthen the electric grid and restore power safely for more than 7 million metered customers across multiple states.
Ongoing resilience actions include installing 65,000 storm-resilient poles and 600 automation devices, clearing 10,000 miles of higher-risk vegetation near power lines; these combined efforts aim to prevent 150 million outage minutes by end of 2026.
More than 400 CenterPoint Energy employees executed the emergency response plan while 100 officials from local and state agencies observed, providing feedback on coordination and communication effectiveness.
CenterPoint Energy will use feedback from third-party expert evaluators to refine emergency protocols, reflecting its commitment to implementing best practices and strengthening response readiness before future hurricane seasons.
