Cenotaph at Duncan's Charles Hoey Park to get makeover in time for Remembrance Day
The $9,000 project will add veterans’ names and repair figures, with half funded by Veterans Affairs Canada and the rest from poppy funds.
Following a successful grant application, the Royal Canadian Legion Chemainus-Duncan Branch 191 will refurbish the Duncan Cenotaph in Charles Hoey Park in time for Remembrance Day, utilizing funding from the Veterans Affairs Canada Commemorative Partnership Program.
Branch president David Nielsen noted the $9,000 project, split between Veteran Affairs and Poppy Funds, involves repairing old figures and adding names of Canadian veterans who died in Afghanistan.
Providing $525,000 in community benefits since 2010, the combined Legion amalgamated the Chemainus Branch 191 and Duncan Legion Branch 53 in May, including recent support for the Chemainus Scouts.
This year's poppy campaign runs from Oct. 24 to Nov. 11, while the Legion's head office in Ottawa authorized free memberships until Dec. 31 to mark the centennial.
On Oct. 25 at 3 p.m., the Legion will host a rededication ceremony and parade. "Over the last few years we have seen a resurgence of people coming out for Remembrance Day," Nielsen said.
