Police Criticise Celtic over Failure to Plan Title Party for Fans
Police Scotland said the club has not arranged fan safety measures, as Celtic could clinch a fifth straight title before thousands gather in Glasgow.
On Friday, Police Scotland Assistant Chief Constable Alan Waddell criticized Celtic Football Club for failing to organize fan safety plans ahead of Saturday's Scottish Premiership title decider against Hearts at Celtic Park.
Prior title celebrations involved mass gatherings and anti-social behavior in Glasgow's Merchant City and Trongate areas, causing significant damage including repairs costing more than £73,000 at the Mercat Cross after 2024 festivities.
While Hearts coordinated with Edinburgh City Council for a potential Sunday open-top bus parade, Celtic has not engaged in similar official event planning despite discussions with Glasgow City Council over many months.
A "comprehensive" policing plan is in place for the weekend; however, Waddell noted that anticipated crowds in the Trongate area have forced the cancellation of officer rest days, straining police resources.
Celtic manager Martin O'Neill urged supporters to be "mindful" of the local community, discouraging mass city center gatherings where no safety management exists ahead of the potential title win.
