Colorado State Patrol reports speeding, impaired and distracted driving as leading causes of holiday crashes, with 124 incidents over two days last year.
- Last year, the Colorado State Patrol identified speeding, impaired driving, distracted driving, lane violations and failure to yield as the top causes of serious crashes, with troopers reporting 48 incidents during the 48-hour period from Christmas Eve through Christmas Day.
- Rising travel volumes and slick conditions increase risks as AAA predicts record holiday travel this year and forecasters expect snow from Thursday through Sunday on the Interstate 70 corridor.
- To ease congestion, CDOT will keep I-70 mountain express lanes open into early January and has halted lane closures on the I-70 Floyd Hill project until Jan. 5, 2026.
