CBS Probe Finds Uber, Lyft, DoorDash Accounts Sold Online
CBS LA found online sellers offering Uber, Lyft and DoorDash accounts without ID checks, while California regulators logged five identity complaints in two years.
CBS News California Investigates found that Uber, Lyft, and DoorDash accounts can be bought or rented online without ID checks, allowing individuals to bypass mandatory background checks.
The Tech Transparency Project identified 80 Facebook groups with up to 800,000 members facilitating a "black market" where users trade driver accounts for rideshare and delivery services.
In March, CBS placed eight delivery orders and found two drivers failed to match their profile photos; one Jamba Juice order assigned to a man named Aram was delivered by someone else.
Uber and DoorDash stated they have "zero tolerance" for account sharing and removed identified accounts, while Democratic lawmaker Dingell is pushing for stronger protections including in-person ID verification.
The California Public Utilities Commission reported receiving four complaints against Uber and one against Lyft over two years for drivers using stolen identities, while Meta is reviewing the report to remove policy-violating content.
