CBS News’ Natalie Morales Talks Brain Health After Alzheimer’s Shock
Morales says early symptoms went unnoticed for years, and she is now urging families to discuss dementia signs with doctors.
CBS News correspondent Natalie Morales, 53, is sharing her family's journey with Alzheimer's, reflecting on the disease that claimed her mother-in-law, Kay Rhodes, in 2017 at age 70.
Kay lived with Alzheimer's for 17 years after receiving an official diagnosis two years after symptoms first appeared, during a time when medical treatments were limited.
Morales recalled a "lightbulb moment" when Kay could not remember where she had hidden her and husband Joe Rhodes' wedding bands, later found in a sock drawer after her passing.
Now 53, the age her mother-in-law was diagnosed, Morales admitted it "hits hard," prompting her partnership with Lilly to encourage families to discuss cognitive health with doctors.
Morales discusses brain health with her husband, Joe, and their children, stating early-onset Alzheimer's carries stronger genetic risk, aiming to help families feel empowered rather than afraid.
