Carney to chair virtual meeting with the premiers as CUSMA talks loom on horizon
Carney updated premiers on U.S. trade talks as Ottawa prepared electricity and online harms plans, including a possible youth social media ban.
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Mark Carney chaired a virtual meeting with Canada's premiers to update them on engagement with the Trump administration regarding CUSMA.
Earlier Wednesday, President Donald Trump stated he is "not looking to renew" CUSMA, indicating the United States will bypass the mandatory July 1 deadline for the trade pact.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who visited Washington earlier this week to advocate for free trade, told premiers that Ottawa is "going to negotiate in good faith" and "people want certainty, they want stability."
Carney and the premiers discussed the federal national electricity strategy, which aims to double the total amount of power generated across Canada by 2050.
The meeting also addressed ongoing internal tensions, including Alberta Premier Danielle Smith's planned separation referendum and disagreements over a proposed oil pipeline to the West Coast involving Alberta.
