Carney heads to Europe on Sunday for NATO, Canada-EU summits

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM AND THE HAGUE, THE NETHERLANDS, JUN 17 – Prime Minister Carney will discuss expanding trade, defence, and security ties and advancing Canada’s NATO defence spending to 2% of GDP, officials said.

  • From June 22 to 25, 2025, Mark Carney will attend summits in Brussels and The Hague, representing Canada at the Canada-EU and NATO meetings.
  • Carney planned this trip after expressing concern that Canada relies heavily on the United States, whose reliability as a defence partner is diminishing, and that too much of Canada's defence budget is being spent there.
  • At the summits, Carney will meet European leaders to deepen Canada-EU relations across trade and defence sectors and engage allies on evolving threats.
  • Canada currently spends about 1.45 per cent of GDP on defence, below the two per cent NATO target worth approximately $62.5 billion annually.
  • Carney said Canada will accelerate military spending to meet NATO's two per cent GDP target and address global defence challenges in a more dangerous world.
