Nurse stole £750k from 99-year-old woman for cosmetic surgery and home improvements
The panel said Rebecca Louise Burwood abused her position of trust, with more than £370,000 taken from the resident’s account and cash withdrawals at ATMs.
- The Nursing and Midwifery Council struck off nurse Rebecca Louise Burwood for stealing more than £750,000 from a vulnerable 99-year-old resident at Bryn Yr Haul Care Home, finding her actions constituted "sustained, calculated" theft.
- Burwood, the former deputy manager at the Mold, Flintshire care home, manipulated the resident into total reliance between 2017 and 2023, coercing her into transferring ownership of her £400,000 property and obtaining lasting power of attorney.
- Evidence showed more than £370,000 left the resident's account over five years, including £160,000 from ATM withdrawals, while Burwood allegedly used funds for home improvements, utility bills, and a £20,000 car and £9,000 campervan.
- North Wales Police dropped their investigation after the resident declined to complain, but Flintshire County Council referred the matter to the NMC on 9 June 2023 following reports of coerced signatures and financial abuse.
- Defense representative Victoria Rees claimed the resident voluntarily provided bank cards for charity donations, but the tribunal rejected this explanation, citing manipulation and coercion before imposing a permanent striking-off order.
