Dustin May Perfect Into 7th Inning and Completes 1-Hitter as Cardinals Blank Padres 3-0
May allowed one hit and struck out nine as St. Louis opened the series with a 3-0 win over San Diego.
On Monday, St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Dustin May threw the first complete game one-hit shutout of his MLB career, leading the team to a 3-0 victory against the San Diego Padres at Busch Stadium.
Following bullpen struggles against the Minnesota Twins, the Cardinals turned to May to stabilize the staff after he maintained a sub-3 ERA over his last 12 starts.
May recorded nine strikeouts and one walk across 101 pitches, allowing only a base hit to Manny Machado while maintaining fastball velocity averaging 97.9 MPH in the first inning and 96.9 MPH in the ninth.
Victory improved the Cardinals' record to 39-31, holding a National League Wildcard spot, with analyst Brenden Schaeffer saying, "Dustin May's one-hitter sends the Cardinals to a 3-0 win over the Padres."
Management faces a July deadline to either trade May for prospects or retain him for a playoff run, with May holding a mutual option for 2027 worth $20 million that could be exercised.
