What Is the AWS Outage? Here's Why Canvas, Snapchat and More Are Down
Canvas users nationwide faced access issues to course materials as Amazon Web Services outage disrupted the platform from 10 a.m. with recovery efforts ongoing, officials said.
- On Monday, Oct. 20, 2025, Canvas, a learning management platform owned by Instructure, confirmed widespread connectivity issues due to an `ongoing AWS incident` starting around 10 a.m. ET.
- Amazon Web Services began reporting issues just after midnight on Oct. 20, and Amazon said the failure originated in its EC2 internal network while working to launch air recovery.
- Over 5,000 people reported problems with Canvas, Downdetector said, with users encountering `502 Bad Gateway` and `Canvas failed to load` messages or redirection to the AWS Health Dashboard.
- Canvas engineers said recovery efforts are underway and will continue until full service is restored, with updates posted on the AWS Health Dashboard and Instructure's status page.
- The disruption affected many major apps and sites, including Snapchat, Reddit, Verizon, and Instacart, while AWS said it was validating a fix at 1:03 p.m. ET and plans to deploy it `as soon as we have confidence we can do so safely.
