The Council of Europe Says There Are "Compressive Sanctions" in Cases of Domestic Violence in Portugal

There are "required urgent actions" in order to fully implement the Istanbul Convention, an international treaty aimed at protecting women from all forms of violence and discrimination.

A group of European Council experts assessing the implementation of the Istanbul Convention on the Fight against Domestic Violence considers that Portugal has evolved significantly in the prevention and fight against this type of crime, but it is clear that it is necessary to require urgent changes in the judicial system to which it is critical.

In the report on Portugal, published today, the Group of Independent Experts of the Council of Europe on the implementation of the Istanbul Convention (GREVIO) recognizes that in recent years the country has made "significant progress" in the implementation of concrete measures to combat violence against women, but understands that urgent action is "needed in certain areas" in order to fully comply with the Istanbul Convention. The Group of Experts calls on the Portuguese authorities to take measures to "several gaps in the implementation of the Convention" and to point out as "priority" the question of "computer and disproportionate sanctions issued by the judicial authority, in particular with regard to domestic and sexual violence".

Much of the urgent recommendations made by a group of experts from the Council of Europe to Portugal are taken into account in the justice system, which points to 'patriotic attitudes'.
