PIL Seeks Probe Into Saurav Das' Identity, Blocking of Social Media Accounts over Remarks Against Judiciary; Madras HC Issues Notice
The plea also seeks to block Saurav Das’s X and Instagram accounts and cancel his passport and Aadhaar if he is found to be a foreign national.
On Friday, the Madras High Court issued notice to the Centre on a public interest litigation seeking an investigation into the nationality and background of Cockroach Janata Party spokesperson Saurav Das.
Petitioner Ganesh Kumar alleged that Das, whose "actual name... was Yogesh Sharma," has roots in Nepal and concealed these details to "fraudulently" obtain an Aadhaar card and passport in India.
Citing social media posts criticizing the judiciary, Kumar requested the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology block Das' accounts for allegedly calling protesters to "storm the Parliament" during a Jantar Mantar protest.
Chief Justice Sushrut Arvind Dharmadhikari and Justice G Arul Murugan, leading a Division Bench, directed Das, the Central government, and private parties to file responses to the allegations.
The High Court scheduled the next hearing for six weeks from now, while the petition demands a probe by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs and potential cancellation of Das' identity documents.
