Canadian veteran Rebecca Marino advances to second round of U.S. Open qualifying
Canadian veteran Rebecca Marino won her first-round qualifying match at the U.S. Open, defeating France's Fiona Fero 6-1, 6-4 to advance closer to the main draw appearance.
Marino, aged 35, served eight aces and broke Fero's serve four times out of six opportunities during the match.
Last year, Marino advanced through qualifying but lost in the first round of the U.S. Open main draw to fellow Canadian Leylah Fernandez.
Marino will face Russia's Elena Pridankina in the next round of the three-round U.S. Open qualifying tournament.
Canadian Rebecca Marino came closer to a second consecutive participation in the U.S. International Women's Main Board by imposing 6-1, 6-4 against French Fiona Fero on Monday in the first round of qualifying.
