Canadian Tire and Tim Hortons launch partnership to boost loyalty programs

Customers who link accounts will earn 2% to 5% in Canadian Tire money and Tims points on select purchases, officials said.

  • On Wednesday, Canadian Tire Corp. Ltd. and Tim Hortons launched a loyalty partnership allowing customers to link Triangle and Tims Rewards accounts to earn between 2 and 5 per cent in Canadian Tire money on select purchases.
  • The arrangement emerged organically as executives from both companies often network on shared boards and sponsor similar events. 'Wouldn't it be great to add more value together?' Hope Bagozzi, Tims' chief marketing officer, recalled thinking.
  • Canadian Tire has about 12 million Triangle members and 1,600 locations, while Tims counts eight million users and 4,000 restaurants. Currently, 53 per cent of Triangle Rewards customers are already enrolled in both loyalty programs.
  • Darryl Jenkins, Canadian Tire's executive vice-president and chief development officer, expects the partnership to drive membership growth. 'Both Triangle Rewards will grow and Tim Hortons reward members will grow,' Jenkins said.
  • Retail Strategy Group principal and co-founder Liza Amlani warned the move may be a 'scramble for share in an oversaturated loyalty market.' Meanwhile, Jenkins noted the launch timing is 'at a really interesting time' amid recent U.S. tariff tensions.
