Canadian short-track speedskaters aim to balance life on and off the ice
Sarault says the team is redefining success as more than medals while 215 athletes from 29 countries open the new World Tour.
The ISU Short Track World Tour begins in Vancouver this weekend at Pacific Coliseum, with more than 215 athletes from 29 countries competing. Speedskater Courtney Sarault leads 12 Canadians starting a new four-year Olympic cycle.
After winning four medals at the Milan Cortina Olympics and capturing a Crystal Globe last season, Sarault is prioritizing balance and recharging outside skating. She recently gave motivational talks, rode a horse at the Calgary Stampede, and attended a Montreal Canadiens game.
Teammate Maxime Laoun, a 30-year-old skater from Montreal, is continuing to compete after contemplating retirement following a leg injury in October. Meanwhile, Dubois balances intensive training with biology studies at the University of Montreal.
This weekend's competition marks the first time Pacific Coliseum has hosted short-track speedskating since the 2010 Olympics. The venue serves as the starting point for the seven-city tour across the new Olympic cycle.
Athletes are viewing this season as a reset rather than pursuing immediate wins, with Sarault aiming to reach peak form by year's end at the world championships. The team views the next four years as a strategic plan toward that goal.
