Canadian Children’s Author Robert Munsch Approved for MAID
Robert Munsch, diagnosed with dementia in 2021, chose medical assistance in dying to avoid prolonged suffering, emphasizing the need for active consent at the time of death.
Canadian children's author Robert Munsch, 79, has announced his intention to undergo medical aid in dying as his dementia progresses.
Munsch decided to pursue MAID after a gradual loss of memory and function, inspired in part by witnessing his brother's slow death from Lou Gehrig's disease.
His storytelling career spans more than 40 books, with tens of millions of copies sold and stories translated into over 20 languages.
Munsch said, "I have to pick the moment when I can still ask for it," expressing his wish to control his final chapter.
MAID has been legal in Canada since 2016 for eligible adults, and Munsch's legacy continues through his books, readings, and ongoing reprints despite no set date for his MAID procedure.
