Canadian firms say cybersecurity budgets falling short as attacks grow: survey
The share of organizations saying their cybersecurity budgets are enough fell to 67% from 74% last year, CIRA found.
The 2026 CIRA Cybersecurity Survey, released Tuesday, reveals declining confidence among Canadian organizations, with only 67 per cent believing their investments keep pace with threats, down from 74 per cent in 2025.
While 76 per cent of organizations increased cybersecurity budgets over the past year, four in 10 experienced a cyber attack between June and July, reflecting escalating threats amid economic uncertainty.
More than eight in 10 decision-makers fear AI-enabled threats, while 82 per cent now carry cybersecurity insurance and two-thirds manage security internally to maintain greater control and ownership.
Digital sovereignty has moved from preference to requirement, as 91 per cent of organizations insist cyber records are processed in Canada and 89 per cent prioritize Canadian-owned vendors.
Jon Ferguson, CIRA vice-president of cyber and domain name system, noted security teams face "more threats, greater complexity and higher expectations," while 87 per cent of organizations maintain incident response plans.
