Canadian Army formally changes divisions as military prepares for future of combat
The overhaul shifts the Army to divisions for combat, domestic defence and support after war games exposed gaps in air defence and command control.
- On Thursday, the Canadian Army officially reorganized into three purpose-built divisions, ending a structure based on geography. This marks the most extensive reorganization in more than 30 years.

- Major-General Wade Rutland, who previously commanded the 3rd Canadian Division, now leads the Manoeuvre Division. CFB Edmonton held a ceremony Thursday marking the retirement of the 3rd Canadian Division to the supplementary Order of Battle.
- The new structure integrates Canada's 10 reserve brigade groups and the Canadian Rangers under the Manoeuvre Division. Although a leaked presentation originally proposed a "Protection Brigade" for air defence, wargaming determined it was unnecessary.
